Australia's Nathan Walker scores first ever AHL goal

Australian raised Nathan Walker played his first AHL (American Hockey League) game tonight and scored his first AHL goal to help the Hersey Bears take a 6-0 win over the UTICA Comets in their first 2013-14 pre season game.

Walkers goal came 3 minutes and 51 seconds into the first period from a shot from the point hitting the goalies mask and somehow managing to have the puck trickle over the line, this goal would end up being the game winning goal as UTICA failed to score a single goal.

With Walker being the first Australian to ever play in the AHL this is a great start to hopefully a successful season for the young Aussie who hopes to make another Australian record and become the first Australian NHL player.

Walker's will play again tomorrow and Sunday (Sunday and Monday morning for Australia) to finish of the pre-season against the WBS Penguins before starting the regular season October 5th (6th October for Australia).

Phil Kessel only suspended for 3 pre season games for reckless 2 handed slash.

Toronto's Phil Kessel won't miss any regular season games after receiving a 3 game pre-season suspension for slashing Buffalo's John Scott.

With pre-season games making little to no difference to the regular season. Kessel should consider himself extremely lucky not to have missed any regular season games.

Melbourne Ice women announce their roster for season 2013-14

The Melbourne Ice women (MIW) have announced their roster for their upcoming season in 2013-14.

2012-13 Melbourne Ice Women's captain Shona Green
A fair amount of change has happened to the roster (posted below) since the 2012-13 season. Australian goalie Georgina Carroll, forward Nicole Tritter, defender Silvia Luis have not joined the team this year.

MIW had four imports last year and all four have moved on. To replace the lose of the imports MIW have signed Maia Smith-Merovitz, Lindsay Audia and goaltender Liz Knox. Also new to main squad this year, Cien Pereira, Melbourne Ice President Emma Poynton, Nerissa Box and goaltender Jodie Walker.

The team will be coached by Melbourne Ice player Tommy Powell and helping Tommy will be team mate Matt Armstrong. With a lot of experience in the teams line up and a young switched on coaching team MIW have a strong chance of winning back to back championships.
